The Secret Garden
Published in Hardcover by Random House (Merchandising) (February, 1993)
Authors: James Howe, Thomas B. Allen, and Frances Hodgson Burnett
Average review score:

Excellent little novel
For children, this is a superb read. Rest assured, though, it gets better with age. As my all-time favorite book, I even bought a special-edition hardcover to pass on to my own little girl. 'The Secret Garden' is a delightful story that can be interpreted on a variety of levels, from a beautiful little story to an intensely moving classic, and each time it is read a new Truth can be derived. I highly recommend 'The Secret Garden' to both children and adults, preferably read from childhood into adulthood.
As an aside, unfortunately the movie version of 'The Secret Garden' is no match for the book. It presents a trite and overacted children's piece that isn't suitable for idiots. I wouldn't subject my child to it.

A literature that the none-literature readers will love.
It's amazing for me to read a book in tree days and want to read it again.I'm a Chinese, but I just can't resist the story line printed on the cover, and I bought a English version.I thought I can read it slowly and prectice my English, but I finished in only three days. Three person who can't love and got together in a great house.Mary,Collin, and Mr.Craven was teached what love is and how to love others by theyselves and by a magical natual-love boy,Dickon. And finally the great house bathed in terror came bake to the arm of the love. I can't write too much about this book. The ending will make you laugh with happiness and make you cry moved by the ending. You really should not only read it,but also own one.

Smashing the Gates of Hell in the Last Days
Published in Paperback by New Leaf Pr (May, 1991)
Author: David Allen Lewis
Average review score:

A Pentecostal Must-Read!
I cannot recommend this book highly enough if you are a member of a Pentecostal type church. It gives a lot of information on how to have a revival leading to a real "end-time" victory for your church. Gives hope in these last days to those who may be wavering in their faith. There's even a great prayer on page 103 that I do not recommend you try unless you are -serious- about battling against "princes and principalities". A absolute must have for every true believer.

The Spanish Revolution 1931-39
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (June, 1973)
Authors: Leon Trotsky, Naomi Allen, and George Breitman
Average review score:

Understanding the Spanish Revolution
This valuable contribution of the writings of Leon Trotsky, the Russian revolutionary, is essential for anyone trying to make sense of the forces involved in the Spanish Civil War, the revolution, and the defeats to fascism in the 1930s. The book contains letters of Trotsky to Spanish communists and fighters, analysis and opinion of what it would take for the workers to win, and the critical argument for united front actions with others to defeat fascism. Trotsky's writings in this collection are often day to day, written in a very readable style, and the editors have done a good job of footnoting to clarify points for the reader. One quote is worth noting re:the war in Spain: "In civil war, incomparably more than in ordinary war, politics dominates strategy. Robert Lee, as an army chieftain, was surely more talented than Grant, but the program of the liquidation of slavery assured victory to Grant." The Spanish people were not victorious; the fascists did win. This book helps to understand how, why, and even the what ifs...

Why does the EZLN survive?
This contribution is being written in mid-2003, as the EZLN approaches its tenth anniversary of having taken the public spotlight. Why does the EZLN survive, when other rebel armies here in Mexico fade away? These others, such as the EPR, state they struggle for power, while the EZLN affirms that it doesn't.

Nowhere is this apparent contradiction resolved more clearly and succinctly than in Trotsky's The Spanish Civil War: 'Audacious social reforms represent the strongest weapon in the civil war and the fundamental condition for the victory over fascism.' This truism is applicable everywhere, even in a country like this one which is not moving toward fascism.

The EZLN has carried out a deep going land reform and established near equality of the sexes in the areas it has liberated. The other rebel armies have not gone nearly as far in implementing social reforms as a critical part of the struggle for power.

A handbook for winning today's struggles
Today working people face every problem Trotsky discusses in this book as economic crisis and wars, right wing and fascist movements, face us more and more. This can be a handbook of how to fight, and how to win.

This is nearly ten years of Trotsky's writings on the Spanish revolution that overthrew the monarchy at the start of the 1930s and the Spanish Civil War that went on from 1936 to 1939.
Trotsky believed the situation in Spain throughout these years was like the situation in Russia in 1917 where the struggle of workers for power on their own, supporting the democratic struggles of peasants for land, and of Spain?s colonies for national independence and Spain?s national and regional minorities for their rights, could have won, defeated fascism, and been a new beacon for world revolution. His discussions here are not academic. They are practical discussions with revolutionists on the front lines in Spain, with fighting workers around the world. Trotsky?s correspondence with Spanish revolutionist Andres Nin here is a primer on the importance of principle in politics and on the importance of building an international and internationalist revolutionary movement.

SQL Weekend Crash Course (With CD-ROM)
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (15 January, 2002)
Author: Allen G. Taylor
Average review score:

great book, shame about the CD
A very good book for getting up to speed quickly - the examples are clearly laid out and meaningful

- just a shame that none of the examples and sample data that the book and CD says are on the CD are actually on the CD

What you need to know about SQL
This book is a streamlined, concise presentation of the ANSI-standard SQL:1999 that all implementations seek to match. It presents the SQL data types and commands and provides examples of their use. The book concentrates on the SQL functions that most people are likely to need, without getting highly technical about obscure, little-used features. It makes a handy reference for the experienced SQL programmer as well as an easy to follow introduction for people new to SQL.

Step-By-Step Basic Carpentry
Published in Paperback by Meredith Books (September, 1997)
Authors: Allen Benjamin W. and Ben Allen
Average review score:

Basic Carpentry
This book is exactly what is claims to be - Basic Carpentry.

Mostly geared for the novice, it will clearly explain many basic improvement and repair tasks around the house and workshop. It does NOT go into more advanced techniques, just gives you the basics.

It's a must have, and an excellent starting place FOR THE UNINITIATED. Covering what tools to start with as well as what tools you will one day want to have - what they're used for and better still what to look for when you buy them (what do you look for in a router? They suggest no less than 1 hp...) Don't waste money on features you don't need - they give you an idea of what's important and what's not.

Other books in the series work well together with little duplicate info - giving the basic homeowner/apartment dweller the basic knowledge to improve their surroundings.

If you already have a firm grasp on this subject - stay away, a more advanced book will be more usefull!

Definatly makes a great gift for a first time homeowner (and we all know one of those)!

An essential book for every enthusiastic homeowner
I discovered this book when I visited the Better Homes and Garden's website; they have select items from the Step-By-Step Basic Carpentry that I found very useful. As a matter of fact, I found them better than my orange 1-2-3 home improvement "bible" that I also own. It contains detailed procedures for every task, including caveats, hints and gotchas. It is well illustrated and well written. I recommended to all my friends and everyone found it to be useful and easy to follow. Happy home improvement.

Style over Substance: A Critical Analysis of African American Teenage Subculture
Published in Paperback by African American Images (August, 1999)
Authors: Ron Mills and Allen Huff
Average review score:

The material is excellent and needed .Great book !!!!!
These authors have provided a rare and fresh look at the way we view African American teenagers. The assumptions many of us make about they way in which these teenagers view their purpose are completly unjustified, The book outlines how the teenagers form their thoughts and provides constructive methods of response in order to get the results we want from this group, we are beginning to fear. The theory oultined in the book has allowed me to work with families and help them to understand their children. We need to offer these authors a thanks from the entire profession of social work

This book is a must read !!!!
This book is a must read for anyone parenting or working with african american teenagers. This is new cutting edge theory and easy reading!!

The Success and Failure of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry, 1945-46: Last Chance in Palestine (Jewish Studies, Vol 3)
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (August, 1987)
Author: Allen Howard Podet
Average review score:

Excellent work, defines the field, somewhat slanted
This is a fine study, which really defines the field. It should be read together with the book "Anglo-American Committee" by a scholar out of Israel, published by Lang in London. This (Podet) one is the far superior work, analyzing the testimony of all the members of the Committee beautifully and summarizing their thoughts better than they did themselves in the testimony. But the author's pro-Zionist slant is visible. The other (Lang) book is a good corrective.

The last chance for peace prior to the birth of Israel.
This is a brilliant study, collecting and analyzing all the available material on this important committee. The committee presented the only compromise that, at that time, would have led to peace in the Near East. The State Department and the British Foreign Office subverted the proposal until the time became too late. A splendid analysis and an important part of the story of the modern birth or rebirth of Israel.
